Focus of Teaching Ministry
In addition to in-depth Biblical interpretation, my teaching ministry focuses
on Christian spirituality and spiritual leadership. There is a growing spiritual
hunger in our world, and ongoing need for helpful guidance for seekers and
mature Christians alike to go deeper in their relationship with God. Many people
want to experience God more powerfully as they grapple with their purpose in
life. Many are seeking greater meaning personally, and guidance for a host
of significant relational and social issues. Nearly everyone wishes they had
more spiritual resources to work through conflicts and challenging issues in
their life.
In my teaching ministry, I address these spiritual and personal longings from
a solid biblical base and extensive personal reflection and experience. I draw
on helpful spiritual practices, academic knowledge and research, and pastoral
and nonprofit leadership experience. A grounding piece for all of my teaching
is my own ongoing journey to know, love and serve God more fully.
Seminars, workshops and classes
In one to five day seminars and workshops, and other special engagements, I
focus on spiritual renewal and effective spiritual leadership. The sessions
are highly interactive, informative, and practical. They are also well grounded
in biblical principles and proven leadership practices, building on the material
found in The Spirit-Led Leader (Alban, 2005). I also offer Bible Study classes
and studies in church and conference settings.
Teaching Topics include the following:
• Spirit-Led Leadership
• Spirit-Led Living
• Spiritual
Depth for Life and Leadership
• Real Transformation in Pursuit of God
• Talking about Jesus in a Pluralistic World
• Philippians for Ministers and Ministry
• Numerous other Bible and Topical Studies
No matter what the specific topic, my teaching ministry always seeks to foster
life transformation. I utilize a variety of pedagogical tools and methods to
engage participants so that their learning can be deeply personal, relevant,
and usable. My prayer is always that students and participants will experience
God in my classes and seminars in life-affirming and life-changing ways. I
seek to help others keep moving forward on their own personal spiritual journey
as they seek to fulfill their God-given dreams and purpose in life.
Qualifications and experience
I am an ordained Christian minister with a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies.
I have extensive teaching and leadership experience in a wide range of contexts.
My teaching ministry moves back and forth from graduate level academic settings
to professional and practical conferences, seminars and classes. I see myself
as a bridge between the academic world of New Testament and Spirituality and
the practical world of ministry, spiritual formation, and leadership.
Much of my life has been devoted to reading, interpreting, and applying the
Bible, learning about personal and spiritual transformation, ministering to
others, teaching and consulting. Key academic and professional qualifications
include:
• Bachelor’s
degree (AB), psychology major, Wheaton College
• Master of Divinity (MDiv), Princeton Theological Seminary
• Ordained pastor, American Baptist Churches
• Master of Theology in Biblical Studies (ThM) and Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) in New Testament, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC)
Over the years my ecumenical teaching ministry has broadened significantly
to include a wide variety of Christian denominations. I have taught in many
different
academic, professional and church settings, including the following:
• Churches of many different denominations (including Presbyterian, Lutheran,
Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal)

Thomas and Luther Seminary in St. Paul)

A full curriculum vitae is available upon request.
Spiritual and biblical grounding
My teaching ministry is grounded in my own relationship with God, my spiritual
gifts of teaching, wisdom and encouragement, and the indispensable, unique
testimony and teaching of the Bible. From the biblical text, we find powerful
testimony and teaching on how God is present in the world and works in human
lives. We also find unparalleled guidance on how we may enjoy a deep relationship
with God and can experience a full and fruitful life of meaningful relationships,
work and service. We
also are introduced to God as Loving Creator, Jesus Christ as Savior and
Lord, and the Holy Spirit as the divine presence within us.
